Elizabeth - Webster
I knew when President Bill Clinton said after his first election that America was getting "two for one," that one of those people was Hillary. While I have always respected President Clinton for his work in office, it was when I read about Hillary trying to "channel", for lack of a better word, into Eleanor Roosevelt's thoughts and ideas for guidance that the other one of the "two for one" was Eleanor Roosevelt's legacy.
I followed Hillary's progress as she worked for Health Care Reform in Bill's first term and was skewered by the Congress and the public for "not acting the part of the first lady." I also watched in disbelief during her Presidential run how the media scrutinized every move she made because she is a woman. It reminded me of Eleanor Roosevelt's criticism for her intelligence, creativity and courage and, yet, both continued on to create a benchmark to which we as women should strive for every day.
I hope that future generations will have their own Eleanor, their own Hillary, to guide them as a beacon through a seemingly unbreakable glass ceiling. As Hillary said, though, the American people have been able to put at least 18 million cracks in that ceiling. I'm hoping that there will be one (if not more) women of the future that push their way through to the next floor and in so doing, take us by the hand with them.
